Basics
Every short drama app uses one simple model. You watch vertical episodes that are tiny. You get the first few for free. Later ones cost coins or a pass. Most confusion stems from that split. Begin with the five answers below.
What is a short drama app?
It streams vertical video made for phones. Each series is broken into many tiny episodes. The leaders are ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax and My Drama. Plots lean on billionaires, revenge and hidden-identity reveals. Werewolf romances are also popular. China is where the format started, Freed by the Sexy Farmer short drama as duanju.
How long does an episode last?
Most last one to two minutes. 60 to 100 seconds is a common target for Western shoots. A series typically spans 20 to 100 episodes. For Married at First Sight, ReelShort lists 90. Double Life, a ReelShort hit, lists 60. In length, a full series can match a movie.
Why do episodes end on cliffhangers?
That is usually the point where free episodes end. The first 5 to 15 are usually free, ReelShort says. Reports from the industry cite 8 to 10. The lock usually hit at peak suspense. That timing is the business model. Viewers also list it among their top complaints.
Who is behind ReelShort, DramaBox and My Drama?
ReelShort is a Crazy Maple Studio app, and the studio is in Sunnyvale, California. That studio is backed by China’s COL Group. Singapore’s StoryMatrix, part of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, runs DramaBox. My Drama is a Holywater app, and Holywater was founded in Kyiv in 2020. October 2025 is when Fox Entertainment took an equity stake. ReelShort arrived in 2022, and DramaBox followed in 2023.
Can I watch in a web browser or on TV?
Yes, though there are limits. My Drama offers an Apple TV app. We came across no verified ReelShort TV app at all. ReelShort’s website offers Google, Facebook, Apple, TikTok and email logins. Your viewing progress syncs with the app. You can get free unlocks only in the app.
Cost
Money is the topic people ask about most. All figures show US App Store prices as of September 2026. Prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Each number is best read as approximate. Check the price screen first, every time. The listings show the following.
Is ReelShort free?
Partly, and the free portion is real. What people searching “is reel short free” or “is reel short app free” want is the catch. There is no charge for the download. You get the opening episodes free. For later ones, you need coins or a VIP pass. Watching ads and checking in earns free coins.
How does the coin system work?
Episodes are unlocked with coins, the app’s currency. ReelShort’s blog sets an episode at about 60 coins. Its smallest pack offers 500 coins for about $4.99. Bigger packs throw in bonus coins. One rewarded ad opens two episodes. A 7-day check-in streak earns 100+ coins.
Do coins ever expire?
The answer depends on the app. Free reward coins usually expire, says ReelShort. Coins you paid for do not. My Drama takes a different approach. Its terms void coins after 12 months of inactivity. Stay active and spend reward coins first.
How much does a weekly pass cost?
The typical US price is around $19.99 a week. That price appears on ReelShort, ShortMax, DramaWave, GoodShort and My Drama. A few apps show cheaper plans. GoodShort starts near $5.99, and ShortMax lists $9.99. Every one of these passes renews automatically. Four forgotten weeks cost four times as much.
Can I get a monthly or yearly plan?
Some apps provide them. A yearly plan appears on ReelShort’s blog at roughly $199.99. The monthly price differs between pages. So that figure is unconfirmed. About $36.99 a month is what DramaWave lists. In the US, ShortMax shows only weekly passes.
Can I watch without paying?
Yes, if you have patience. Begin by watching each series’ free first episodes. Use rewarded ads to unlock more. Don’t break your daily check-in streak. There are also official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Using all four together goes furthest.
Subscriptions and Cancellation
Weekly passes keep renewing until you stop them. Plenty of people don’t expect that. It is quick to cancel once you know where. Where to cancel comes down to how you paid. Stores cancel store purchases. Companies handle website purchases.
Will deleting the app cancel my subscription?
No, and this mistake is common. Apple says deleting an app does not end its subscription. Google states the same thing about uninstalling. That warning is repeated in My Drama’s terms. The pass renews until you cancel. Always cancel, then delete.
How do I cancel on iPhone?
Begin by opening the Settings app. Tap your name at the top of the screen. Then select Subscriptions. Select the short drama app from the list. Tap Cancel and then confirm it. Act a day before renewal to be safe.
How can I cancel on Android?
Open the Google Play Store app. Next, go to your Subscriptions list. Find the short drama app there and select it. Tap Cancel and work through the prompts. Keep in mind that uninstalling does not cancel anything. Look at the list again to confirm the change.
Is it possible to cancel inside the app?
Sometimes, though the store route is safer. ShortMax’s terms note an in-app option under About Subscription. They point store buyers to App Store or Google Play. Only what Apple and Google billed is under their control. Website buyers should reach out to the company. Save a screenshot of every cancellation.
Why did I get charged after a free trial?
The wording of trials can confuse. ShortMax’s developer admits its “free trial” and “24 hours free” labels confused people. Under its terms, passes renew 24 hours before they expire. The renewal comes at the same price. Cancel one day before any trial runs out. After that, confirm the store shows it cancelled.
Refunds
Refunds hinge on who took your money. App Store charges go through Apple. Play charges are handled by Google. Website charges go through the companies. No route guarantees a refund. This table lays out each path.
| Where you paid | Cancelling | Where to seek a refund | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone (App Store) | Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Cancel | The Report a Problem page from Apple | Deleting the app does not cancel |
| Android (Google Play) | Google Play, Subscriptions, Cancel | Google within 48 hours, later the developer | Uninstalling does not cancel |
| Website | The app company’s account or support | The app company only | Often non-refundable, per My Drama’s terms |
How do I get a refund from Apple?
Apple’s Report a Problem page is where you start. Use the paying Apple ID to log in. Pick the charge and explain in a few words. Apple usually replies within 24 to 48 hours. Apple decides, not the app developer. Also cancel the pass, or it renews.
How do refunds work on Google Play?
Timing is the biggest factor here. According to Google, you may get a refund within 48 hours of purchase. Ask for it directly through Google Play. After that window, get in touch with the developer. ReelShort tells users to go to Profile, then Feedback. If a renewal surprises you, act quickly.
What happens with website purchases?
The app company handles those. There, Apple and Google cannot help. Web purchases are non-refundable except where law requires, according to My Drama’s terms. Under its terms, EU and UK users get a 14-day withdrawal right. Other companies’ rules are their own. Go through the terms before paying online.
Can I get a refund for unused coins?
Usually not, and the terms say so. My Drama’s terms call coin purchases final. ShortMax will not refund unless its own fault makes a product unusable. Store requests may help with accidental purchases. Buy the smallest coin pack until a series grabs you. Mistakes then set you back less.
Look-Alike Apps and Safety
Here, name confusion is everywhere. A misspelling can lead to minor unrelated apps. A few downloads pose a risk. Some sites are copies of big brands. Using the real names protects your money. These answers separate the real from the fake.
Is Real Short a real app?
No, not that we could locate. Real Short is a misspelled version of ReelShort. The same goes for “real short app”, “realshot”, “reel shot” and probably “shot shorts” too. The real name is one word, not two. Its App Store seller is New Leaf Publishing. Verify that before downloading.
What are ReelBox, DailyShort and GoldShort TV, exactly?
These are small, unrelated apps. ReelBox, found via “reel box” or “reelbox tv”, has 50K+ Android installs. It is not linked to ReelShort or DramaBox. DailyShort, often typed “daily short”, has 100K+ installs. GoldShort TV is an app for Android TV that has 10K+ installs. Most people searching probably mean GoodShort.
Are ShortTV and ShortMax the same?
Very likely, though unconfirmed. SHORTTV LIMITED in Hong Kong is ShortMax’s legal entity. ShortMax’s website redirects to ShortTV’s site. Both apps arrived in September 2023. We could not find an official rename announcement. Unrelated apps also appear when you search “short tv” or “short max”.
Is it safe to use mod APKs and coin generators?
No, and not one is official. Mod APKs are modified app copies from outside official stores. One DramaBox look-alike describes its download as an unofficial modified version. Coin generators are not official either. What they do is something you cannot verify. Only use official stores and websites.
Why does ReelShort have a low rating on Trustpilot?
From 250 reviews, ReelShort’s Trustpilot page shows 1.3 out of 5. A frequent complaint is being charged after cancelling. Weekly auto-renewals are often mentioned. Other reviewers mention coin prices and denied refunds. Any review site mirrors the people who chose to post. Treat it as a list of things to check rather than a verdict.
